The Best Disneyland Churros Copycat Recipe

There’s nothing quite like a churro from the carts at Disneyland. The warm crumby texture and the soft chewy bite of sweetness with cinnamon, brings back that nostalgic moment of the magic that Mickey Mouse brings.

When you take a bite of these, you will be instantly transported back to Disney, enjoying this delicious treat.

I had noticed that Disney had put up an official recipe for their delicious Churros a while back, and I decided to make a Disneyland Churros.

Disneyland Churros: A Taste of Magic at Home

Did you know those iconic churros you crave at Disneyland have a fascinating story? While churros themselves are a classic Spanish treat, Disneyland transformed them into a park staple. It’s said their popularity really took off in the 1980s, becoming a must-have snack for families of all ages. The warm, cinnamon-sugar aroma wafting through the park became synonymous with happy memories and magical moments, and now you can find these iconic snacks on t-shirts, magnets, stationary, handbags, mickey ears and more!

Alright, churro aficionados! Let's ditch the ordinary and dive into the secrets of crafting truly extraordinary churros. Here's how to make your batch the talk of the town:

  • Oil Temp, Your Secret Weapon: Forget guessing games! A candy thermometer is your churro's best friend. Preheating the oil to that perfect 350°F (175°C) and keeping it there is non-negotiable. Start heating it while you whip up the dough – trust me, patience is a virtue here.
  • Star Power Piping: For those classic, ridged churros that scream "I'm a pro!", reach for a closed star piping tip. The rounded edges create those defined grooves, resulting in a delightfully crispy exterior.

  • Dough Chill-Out Time: Patience, my friends! Let that dough cool down a bit before adding the eggs. We're aiming for fluffy, not scrambled. Have your mixer primed and ready to go as soon as you add each egg, because the dough will hold a lot of heat.

  • Golden Brown is the Goal: Forget timers! Your eyes are the ultimate judge. Watch for that perfect golden hue. If they're pale, they'll be doughy inside. Let them bask in the oil until they're beautifully bronzed.

  • Sugar Coating Perfection: Timing is key! Let your churros drain on some paper towels for just a moment or two – about 15 seconds. Too wet, and the sugar clumps. Too dry, and it won't stick. Aim for that sweet spot where the sugar clings to the churros beautifully.

  • Warm, Wonderful, and Shareable: Serve them piping hot! A drizzle of chocolate or caramel never hurts, or serve the sauces on the side like I do. Freshly made churros are pure joy, for families of all ages. Be prepared to become everyone's favorite person – these treats are truly irresistible, and reminiscent of the best days at Disneyland!

Here are some easy churro variations that'll make your churros extra special:

1. Pumpkin Spice Delight:

  • How-to: Mix 1-2 teaspoons of pumpkin spice blend into the cinnamon-sugar coating. For an extra boost, add 1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin spice to the dough mixture while it's cooling.
  • Why it's great: Perfect for fall or any time you crave warm, cozy flavors.

2. Chocolate Churro Indulgence:

  • How-to: After frying and draining, skip the cinnamon-sugar. Instead, dip the warm churros in melted dark, milk, or white chocolate. For a fun twist, drizzle with a contrasting chocolate or sprinkle with chocolate shavings.
  • Why it's great: A decadent treat for chocolate lovers.

3. Citrus Zest Zing:

  • How-to: Add the zest of one orange or lemon to the dough mixture while it's cooling. Mix the zest of the same citrus fruit into the cinnamon-sugar coating.
  • Why it's great: Adds a refreshing, bright flavor that balances the sweetness.

4. Spicy Mexican Chocolate Churros:

  • How-to: Mix 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper into the sugar coating. Melt some dark chocolate and add a pinch of cayenne pepper into the melted chocolate. Dip the churros into the melted chocolate.
  • Why it's great: Adds a kick of heat that complements the sweetness and chocolate.
